Appointed as an associate professor at the VU University Medical Center Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Jenny van der Steen has focused her work as an epidemiologist on end of life in long-term care settings, particularly in dementia. She authored the EAPC white paper on palliative care in dementia. She is an editor of Palliative Medicine and associate editor of Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Collaboration with researchers in the US, Canada, Japan, France, Israel, Italy in addition to Flanders has been part of cross-national work, in part supported by two career awards from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Quality of life and dying, symptom burden, and families’ satisfaction with care are main outcomes of her studies. Other work focuses on methodological issues such as research design and properties of measurement instruments, mortality risk scores, spiritual care, family counselling, treatment and its effectiveness, and infectious diseases in nursing home residents.
