PACE at the 9th EAPC World Research Congress – Dublin, Ireland
The 9th EAPC World Research Congress took place in Dublin, Ireland 8-10th June 2016. The congress was very well attended by healthcare professionals representing a range of disciplines and academics from throughout Europe and beyond. Over one thousand two hundred delegates from forty countries globally attended the congress. A broad range of palliative care topics were presented by researchers ranging from novice to expert. Palliative care research was presented on topics ranging from clinical trials to carers, spirituality to outcome measures, and integrated care to the topic of PACE – palliative care of older people in long term care facilities in Europe.
The congress scientific committee were hugely impressed by the almost 1000 abstracts that were submitted for presentation the congress. The PACE project was well-represented with Lieve Van Den Block presenting one of the plenary sessions. There were also several other PACE presentations on a range of aspects of the study, some as posters. Over the course of the conference there were 342 posters on display. A select few were identified for presentation during a plenary session which gave the authors a great opportunity to expand on their research and also enabled enthusiastic delegates to ask questions and debate some of the issues raised in the selected posters.
A really full programme with multiple parallel sessions taking place concurrently meant that Twitter feed was a particularly useful way of keeping abreast of what was happening in sessions and was helpful to delegates who were able to get a flavour of presentations (and sometimes a photo of a slide or two) even if they were unable to attend.
As always with EAPC events, the Dublin congress was an opportunity to meet and network with colleagues, make new connections and put names to faces. The venue, the food, the facilities, and the exhibitors stands were all excellent. The next EAPC congress is the 15th EAPC World Congress which takes place in Madrid 18-20 May 2016. Abstract submission closes on 16th October 2016. I really hope to see many of you there.
